We Lost A Good One… We lost a good one. This week it was announced that David Lynch passed away at the age of 78. For those of you that don’t know David Lynch, he was a movie director, screenwriter, author, painter, director, producer, and all around artist. When we were in the formation period of Black Coffee one of the things that united our vision was a strong love for the television series David Lynch created, Twin Peaks. The series from the 1990’s is quirky, dark, serious, funny, dramatic, and perhaps most importantly, beautiful. In such a short two season show Lynch showed the world for what it is, complicated, unknown, mysterious, and full of wonder. Lynch was born in Missoula, Montana in 1946, and Twin Peaks had hints of his love for the northwest, down to a lumber mill in the introduction sequence that always reminds me of the Bonner Mill when I arrived in Missoula in 1994. And throughout the television show there was a constant highlight of coffee. Simple little moments scattered throughout the show built a larger life philosophy that David Lynch was known to possess. In one quintessential quote, the protagonist, Special Agent Dale Cooper says to another law enforcement officer, “Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it. Don’t wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men’s store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.” It’s a sort of life philosophy I’ve clung to over the years. It’s been a guiding principle for how I think of coffee. As something that offers a refuge in the moment. A moment of pause and beauty no matter what is going on the world around me… It’s a large reason why I love working in coffee. It is a form of joy available to all of us, simple, mysterious in its chemical workings, and easily enjoyed. When we started Black Coffee in 2010 we named two coffees as a wink & a nod to the show Twin Peaks. Laura & Red Room. Laura being the center of the show, her death the mystery that carry’s the plot, and Red Room being a sort of underworld where spirits find gateways between the spiritual and physical world. This weekend as one further nod to the incredible artist that was David Lynch we are putting those two coffees on sale. I hope you will try them and take a few moments to simply sit and watch the world as you sip. “Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it. Don’t wait for it.
